Although I prefer the Sig P227 or P220 Carry size. They are more combat ready firearms IMO.
I LIKE the 1911 for retro pieces. They have put the perps. in their permanent reserved seating areas.

Any reason to go with an older 1970*s model over the new production ones? I was talking to a friend and he says 1970*s are so much better. When I asked how, all he could say was better parts and built better. I*m not so sure about this? My concern with buying an older one is how much it*s been mucked with.

I can*t think of a pistol that gets f*d with more than the 1911. Unless you really know what you*re looking at you probably should avoid used/gun show buys of the older models.

Colt quality was very hit/miss in the 70*s through the 90*s. I*ve had plenty of less than stellar examples come through here. Whenever they went to cnc machining the quality instantly improved. I*m thinking somewhere around early 2000*s. The modern are much improved in terms of barrel fit and appearance.

I like the one above as a starting point for building up carry guns. I prefer the old style slide serrations which are tough to find on any other models. I*m not a fan of front serrations or the modern rear serrations.

The model Jen posted above is the way to go. Good solid new production Series 70 Gov't. Model. They run well and look pretty doing it. I sell two or three a month here in the shop. NEVER had a negative issue with any of them. Unless some dealer is trying to rape you it should run you $899.00ish + sales tax give or take a few $$$$$.

If you decide to go with a Non-Colt I'd look at the Springfield Armory Garrison or Mil-Spec Series.

Back in the early 80's I had a Colt 70 series. I bought it used like the one I posted. I put all kinds of reloads and factory ammo through it and the only thing it didn't like was the Speer 200gr hollow point that were nick named "flying ashtrays". There was no telling how many rounds had gone through it before I bought it. I put at least 10k rounds through it. Today I for a 1911 I have a Springfield GI 1911. The GI model is no longer available but the Mil Spec is a better upgrade. The biggest problem with the Springfield was it came with a Hillary Hole style of "Internal Lock System" in the spring housing. I deleted that and installed a normal spring housing, springs and pins using a Smith and Alexander housing and standard spring, cap, retainer and pins I used Wolff Springs and Wilson Combat full pin kit. I bought the gun off of Gun Broker and had no idea Springfield was using a a Hillary Hole Safety. They've since changed their ways and won't talk about it.
