Looked to me that he had ample time to have gun in hand by the actions of the stabber prior to the stabbing. Couldn't see what the crashing noises were from at the top of the screen but he was obviously smashing something. Erratic behavior at 4am in the chitty is a good indicator that it's time to have your hand on your piece.

There's really no defense against a sneak attack stabbing. If the attacker does show his hand, your best defense is using your own.

I think he did show his hand, hence the guy pushing him. It's just a case of city living at this point.
