I immediately thought the same and I also had to smile. There are some things you will hear once as a kid and never forget. It seems like this alternate version of the song made the rounds nation wide. The only difference is in the Georgia version we sang "did he" instead of "up a tree".

Look around online a bit. There's plenty of information on tanning out there. Fur on and fur off.
Tanning with brain can get sketchy, considering both rabies and prion diseases concentrate in brain tissue. You can apparently substitute egg yolks for that step.
First thing is, figure out how to prep the hide to get rid of all the fat and to prevent the hair from slipping. You'll have to scrape all the fat off, which will leave a very greasy hide. I believe you just wash in dish soap to get rid of that, but haven't been down that rabbit hole in years.
Here's a template for making the cap, once the leather is prepped.
