Not sure......I originally searched "Davey Crockett and coonskin hat" to find a pic. But the caption in the article said Daniel Boone.

But whoever it is I don't think Davey Crockett bought his his hat from amazon either.

Edit: looked back at my history and this is the link. Its titled "When Coonskin Caps Were Cool". Not that cooonskin hats will ever be uncool but it is a decent short article about coonskin hats and their resurgence in the 50's. It is where I go the pic that may or may not be correct since they did talk a lot more about Davey Crockett in the article.

I'm pretty sure that's Fess Parker and when I see that, I get a subliminal Davey Crockett theme song in my head. Davey, Davey Crockett, king of the wild frontier (or something like that).

Yeah, it's confusing as hell because (a) most people can't differentiate Daniel Boone and Davey Crockett in the first place, and (b) Fess Parker played BOTH of them, which adds to the confusion.

That is exactly what I was thinking. And I originally wanted to post the video of Davey Crockett and the theme song. But when I searched I saw the Daniel Boon pic and thought it was good enough.

In the video I did see that Daniel boon is wearing an upgraded cap with the raccoon's head on it. If you are going to make a coonskin hat you might as well go all out!

I can send you a recipe to tan using salt and alum. Be aware that racoon hides are very greasy and the process is less than fun. Skinning and fleshing the hide is the tedious part. Once you get that done properly, the actual tanning is easy. If you have access to the Foxfire series of books, Foxfire 3 has a chapter on tanning.
