    I'm a busy man. Some months I'm lucky if I get an hour at the range, so sometimes I only take what I have time to shoot. All of my guns that have optics also have iron sights. That way I can keep going if the battery dies or the optic fails completely.

    I am a huge fan of the Vortex Spirfire series of sights for that reason

    It's a prism sight with the reticle etched onto the glass that is illuminated when the batteries are good

    But if the batteries fail it's still a functional black dot

    They are also perfect for people with astigmatisms because where a reflex red dot looks like a star exploding to me, the prism red dots are crystal clear

    Sure the entire optic could get broken but if that happened on range day I'd be too pissed to want to keep shooting anyway

    Keep an extra battery, a quality red dot never dies, even a Sig Romeo 5 red dot will likely never die.

    But.... if it ever does ... it will be at the least opportune moment imaginable.
