    Default My Winter Project

I picked up this cedar hope chest at the Goodwill a couple of weeks ago and have just started working on it. The inside is in prestine condition but the outside needs some major work! I am planning on stripping off all of the bad veneer, sanding it, staining and finishing it.

I have never done any word working but there is alot of info on the net. I read that the glue for the veneer doesn't like heat and moisture so I've been using a steam iron to strip it off.

If anyone has any advise that would be great. After if finish I would like to find a new latch as whatever was there is missing. Anyone know where I can find one?

How old a chest is it? The reason that I ask is that, dependent on the age, there could be several different glues in use for the veneer. Different glues penetrate differently and give off differing volitile compounds when exposed to heat so that would make a difference in how you remove the veneer/glue.

I was actually wondering about that and am thinking that I should be working on it in a well ventilated area. As far as I can tell it was made in the 40's or 50's.

I've refinished and scratch-built a number of pieces of small furniture over the years and can tell you that an exhaust fan comes in very handy if you like to keep your brain cells
