How to legally cross Maryland panhandle?

I live in the Pittsburgh area, and I want to hike in a few good parks in Virginia. Most reasonable routes will cross Maryland Panhandle. How do I make sure that I am covered by Interstate transportation of firearms?

Can I simply separate the magazine from my gun and store them in different containers in my trunk, or do I need to lock the gun up?

If I stop in Maryland for gas/food, will that make a difference?

Magazine in console or glove box, gun in case in trunk. That's the way I do it when we go through md on vacation. I wouldn't stop, especially since you're only going to be crossing a little piece of md.

Although it may not be required, it is a good idea to lock your ammunition and guns in separate lock boxes in the trunk or anywhere out of immediate reach.

It is important to note that 18 USC § 926A only allows you to travel through, not to, the states in which it*s illegal to carry firearms. In states with strict gun laws (such as California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York), it may be a good idea not to stop at all. In addition, be sure to comply with any magazine and ammunition restrictions that are in place at your destination.

My preferred route is 70E to 522 south through Hancock MD to Berkely Springs WV , then Winchester VA.
On the bridge over the Potomac, the speed limit is 35 MPH and I follow it religiously. Then I am in WV and all is good.

Pretty drive, low stress.

It's a pity that driving in MD is otherwise enjoyable. In VA, >85 or >20 over the posted limit is an automatic reckless driving charge (class 1 misdemeanor).

When I have to go through hostile territory, I have two lock boxes cabled to the tie downs in the back of the truck bed. Gun in one and ammo in the other.

Thanks. The MD licensing/renewing process looks onerous, so I'll need to travel more frequently to make it worthwhile.

I'm happy that my TX LTC covers DE (and NE NV NM but they are pretty far away). SC honors TX LTC but only for TX residents so I'm out of luck after my moving. It's a good thing to maintain but probably not worthwhile for most people in PA to get out of their way to get one.

What I really miss is skipping the background check using a TX LTC as a resident in TX. Avoid delays and reduce the load of the background check system. More importantly, I also didn't need to be worried about the fat fingers of an FFL causing a denial and dispatching LEO to the store or my doorstep.
