Wow, I can think of any number of really unpleasant things that I'd rather do than to shoot this rifle.

I remember watching his .50 cal explode on him, and that was really hard to watch

    Okay, why?
We use to kill woolly mammoths with flint tipped spears, now we need anti-tank rounds to hunt with. Fun gun but no practical use unless my ex-wife wants to come back.

While that rifle is recent production, the 4-bore itself isn't. 4-bore goes back to at least the mid 1800's(or earlier) as muzzleloading, then cartridges were made thereafter. The original cartridges were loaded with blackpowder and were the top African game rifles of the time. ...back when they were shooting pure lead balls & bullets, before the inception of jacketed bullets. Jacketed bullets and smokeless powders pretty much did away with the need of big-ass "bore rifles", although many folks still preferred the big guns even in smokeless(Holland & Holland's .600NE, the .700NE is a relatively new thing from 1988).

There were 2-bore rifles as well shooting 8oz balls/bullets, and punt guns with even bigger gauges(usually loaded with shot only).

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St Michaels, MD has some pretty cool examples of the punt guns they used to hunt waterfowl on the Chesapeake and it's tributaries.

Here's a question, what comes after a 1 gauge if you're going bigger? I understand how gauge is determined but what comes after you get bigger that a 1 pound lead ball.

    ^^^^^ a smoothbore cannon? You know, like a 2-pounder, a 6-pounder, or a 12-pounder...
