Leather wrapping on gunstock - how? Calling leather workers!
I'm actually looking at 2 projects- first, placing a leather wrap on the smaller end of a powder horn (both as a more secure hold and a place to anchor the sling strap...and second, "reinforcing" the wrist of a lever action rifle. I've seen pics - especially of native american rifles- that use this technique, and it looks pretty cool, so....I've got plenty of leather, but has anyone tried this? I read in a western novel about someone reinforcing the wrist of a broken rifle stock by soaking leather and having it shrink around the stock....but it was a novel....been looking on the 'net with no luck. Any leather workers out there? Thanks in advance for any info.

I think levers come pretty close in the homed position. Is there room for leather that's thick enough to make any difference in strength?

There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

Indians used rawhide and not the tanned leather you usually see. When soaked rawhide becomes soft and stretchable but when it dries it shrinks a lot and becomes hard. I think this is what you want.
I don't know how they secured the end so it just doesn't unravel when it dries.

Good info already. I didn't know it should be rawhide- I can find some of that and work with it. I did check the wrist area of the lever action- yup, it'll fit. Just. Thanks, guys, now to find some rawhide.....

I haven't seen rawhide in years but if you only need a short piece look at a pet store for some dog chew toys. Get he ones you give to a dog that have tied ends and look like a bone. Once soaked and untied you would probably get a 12 inch strip. That should easily wrap around a rifle wrist and give you a double layer.
