I believe it indicates the barrel is an original Marlin-made product, not one made by Remington.

Correct. The "JM" stamped rifle was made by Marlin and therefore "better" than the Remington manufactured guns.

It's worth it to be the first on your block to have one.

Exhibit A of why I hate what Gunbroker has done to the gun industry.

Cheapest I saw of any place that actually has it in stock, is $1,300. Still WAY too much for a 336.

Hopefully they'll be down to $750 in a year.

Unfortunately, the gun industry has taken a page out of the recreational scuba diving industry play book which says if I charge 2 times what it's worth and the public buys it, I only have to produce half as many to make the same money which means less labor costs, less wear and tear on manufacturing equipment, etc. Even if sales of the gun fall 50% , they still make the same as if they were producing twice as many of them at the lower rate. It's win win for them.

According to some inflation calculators, if the marlin sold for 90.75 new in 1955
    https://1895gunner.com/gunroom/marlin336SC.html ,
that is equivalent to $1,035 in today's dollars.

    Not so crazy I guess

I guess that's the way people are calculating prices for USED lever guns too.
