Hands down the Sig Sauer P226. Old one, new one, base model or all decked out. Probably the best factory handgun ever produced, and shooting one is hand gunner bliss. Reliability is world renowned.

The Beretta 92 and CZ75 are also excellent pistols that are very enjoyable to shoot.

I have never had or shot a full size 1911 in 9mm, but I bet a good one would rival the P226.

Another vote for the SIG 226 and 228. Every one that I've owned (down to one 226 and three 228s now) has been accurate, a joy to shoot, and utterly reliable over many thousands of rounds.

For single stack 9mm handguns, the SIG P210A Standard and P210A Carry are probably the most accurate 9mm pistols that I own, with a Commander size bobbed Dan Wesson 1911 possibly tied in terms of shootability, accuracy, and reliability. The P210s are just amazing in terms of accuracy; they shoot as if laser-guided. A couple friends have said, "But they only have eight rounds!" I just reply that given their accuracy, I likely don't need more.

I used to own one each of a civvie version of the SIG M17 and M18, and both of them spit brass onto my head and into my face. The were reliable for the time during which I owned them, accuracy was so-so because I kept anticipating the brass in my face. They are long gone.

But I'll take any P220, P225/P6, P226, P227, or P228 any day of the week. Newer SIGs, not soo much.

My West German P226 is hoot to shoot. I love the "pumpkin on a fence post" sights. Very easy to see and line up. Good enough for Navy SEALS too.

I recently picked up a P320 DH3 (basically a SIG Custom works X5) That has to be the flattest, smoothest shooting 9mm i've owned.

Yes, I'm British... But I have good teeth!

It’s not bad but it’s not going to wow you. It’s very much every bit of a Glock of a different maker.

Same grip angle & feel? If so, that's not for me. Glocks don't feel right in my hands

I second Noah on the Sig models mentioned in his post. I've settled on the P228/P229 military hybrid M-11A1 for a 9mm. Never a FTF and puts the rounds where I want them to go, when I want them to go there.
I also dearly love the older Browning HPs. I prefer the Canadian Inglis variant.
Oh and I don't carry a 9mm all that often but when I do it's one of those two models. (Did that just sound like the Dos Equis guy?)
