+1 on the S&S EZ line or better still, the Equalizer. Or you could go to a 22. My wife can't rack any of the 9s, but she can rack my TX22 easily. Not most people's first choice for personal defense, but it'll do the job.

I too suggest the "hold the slide, push the GUN" method suggested by EM.

My wife had similar issues as the OP's, and found the EZ models to definitely be easier to manipulate. So much so that she bought one to be her primary carry.

There's also the option of the Berettas with tip-up barrels that you don't have to rack the slide on at all.

The downside being the largest caliber they make them in is .32. I'd probably look at the s&w EZ's first.

Revolvers are a legitimate option. The problem with them being that while snub nose revolvers are very nice to carry they aren't very nice to shoot, and they're pretty terrible weapons.

Agree on the S&W EZ. It*s the only gun my wife actually enjoys shooting. The New Equalizer looks nice too.

Your wife's age is not given conditions such as arthritis can make racking a slide difficult, My wife with arthritis has tried with EZ slides to no success .She is happy and prepared enough carrying a Taurus 85 Ultralite with older style Pachmayer grips ,Critical defense rounds 5 shot . She is more than proficient and suggest getting your wife a snub in 2-3 inch 38spl with bigger than the compact grips offered today .

She's retired for the evening, I'm going to try the push-pull method that EM suggested tomorrow, see if she can make it work I did already foolislhy pollute her mind with the idea that if you have a problem with a revolver firing, you just keep pulling the trigger til one goes bang....right? I have next-to-zero confidence of her clearing a semi-auto jam under pressure (confidence in myself is only slightly higher)

At any rate, I have a saturday night special in .38spc i stick in my wife's purse when I'm wearing attire that makes it difficult to carry. That way I don't have to worry about round in the chamber and a hair trigger. She only has her LCTF to carry firearms for me when I can't.
