Projectile for 5" gun

My experience says the 5" projectile is probably a HE round. If my memory serves me the horizontal split in the case several inches down from the nose would be for setting a mechanical timed fuze by rotating the top piece prior to completion of ramming the 2 piece powder/projectile combo.

HE, illumination, smoke, etc all had time delay fuzes. Some Fuzes were point detonating, some were a combination of functions. They are beautiful intricate mechanisms, made to be destroyed. They keep the shell safe until armed/programmed and then the rotation of the shell in the barrel as it is fired completes the arming process and makes it ready to do its job. I've read a few books on this topic recently. Very interesting stuff.

So the base is still attached (assuming it is an illumination round) which doesn't help.

Looks like it was buried for some time.

The government used to dump live ordnance in the ocean offshore or just off the beach. This is possibly a piece of live ordnance (UXO - unexploded ordnance) that someone found metal detecting or diving.

There shouldn*t even be a question. If it*s not immediately obvious it*s inert, it*s potential uxo.
Get it the f outside and call the cops.
Even IF it*s only a lume, it*ll burn your house down and probably kill you if you*re close.
Did you put it in your car and bring it home?

How can you tell it's inert? Is there a way to check or are you just taking the last guy's word on it?

Bang it on the nose with a hammer. That works once.

You could always put it on a pallet and deliver it to the local BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) office. They'll know what to do with it and you'll save them some money and time by not having to come and get it.

There doesn't seem like there is as much rust around the fuse so there is a good chance someone unscrewed it at one point. But I wouldn't take the chance to try it. If a few dollars is worth taking a chance for your life google one and see how much it is worth and if you want to chance it. But in that condition its probably not worth that much.

As others have said you should call and have it disposed of but be prepared for a clusterfuck. There will be truckloads of cops, a bunch of large swat team styled trucks, and lots of commotion. They will probably evacuate your whole block and you will have to leave for a while so have it outside in the middle of the yard before you call them.
