Philadelphia police are warning drivers about a carjacking crime ring where suspects are holding up drivers at gunpoint, stealing the cars, and driving them to New Jersey.
Police say there have been 41 carjackings in 2023 where suspects are stealing vehicles from Philadelphia and escaping across bridges along the Delaware River.

PHILADELPHIA — A man was carjacked after trying to do the right thing in a fender bender situation earlier this month, Philadelphia Police said.

According to police, the incident occurred at about 8:20 p.m. Sept. 2 at a gas station at 4200 G Street

The victim was leaving the business's parking lot onto 700 block of Hunting Park Avenue when it struck a white vehicle that was also pulling out onto the road.

Both vehicles stopped and when the victim got out of his vehicle to exchange information with the other driver, the people in the other vehicle demanded cash, saying they don't have insurance, policed said.

That's when one of the men in the other vehicle showed the victim a handgun and said he was going to take the victim's vehicle if he didn't pay cash, police said. The armed man then got into the victim's vehicle and drove off heading west on Hunting Park Avenue, with the white vehicle following, police said.

No one was hurt, and no other items were taken, according to police.

21-year-old Delaware man Josiah Brown has been sentenced to more than seven years behind bars in the 2021 Philadelphia carjacking of U.S. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon.

Brown, who brandished a gun at the congresswoman, said he didn*t realize he was robbing an official.*

Carjackings in Philadelphia hit a record high in 2022 with a 53% increase from the previous year.

    * Translation from lawyer-telling-him-what-to-say to English:

"If I had known she was a *somebody*, particularly a DEMOCRAT *somebody*, I'd have gone after a regular citizen instead.

    Woe is me.

Reduce my sentence and I'll be so incredibly grateful, I'll vote straight D (should I remember to register to vote) for the rest of my life (however long that may be)."

Brown, then 19, said he didn*t know who the congresswoman was and his weapon was unloaded. He also didn't know that the vehicle had a tracker that quickly led authorities to his Wilmington home. He and four juveniles were arrested at nearby Christiana Fashion Center in Newark, Delaware, about 45 miles from Philadelphia.

Brown was charged with federal counts of carjacking and brandishing a gun during a violent crime, which carries a seven-year mandatory minimum term. The other teens * aged 13, 14, 15 and 16 *were charged in juvenile court in Delaware with receiving stolen property.
