Can I throw a gun away?
People always say, tounge-in-cheek, that they had a boat accident and don't have their guns.
What if I said I threw my gun in the garbage and don't have it anymore? Is that illegal?

Re: Can I throw a gun away?
As fingers said not illegal but remember if the weapon is in any way registered to you and it is then found and used in some fashion guess who they are gonna come looking for (and BOY will they have some questions for you)
Not a situation I would want to be in, that's for sure

Re: Can I throw a gun away?
Throwing a gun in the trash is an unlawful transfer to the trash collection agency.
Claiming to have thrown a gun away may come back to bite you if you make that claim to a LEO, then it's later found in your attic.

Re: Can I throw a gun away?
So lets expand the question a little. Let's say, I have a Series 70 Colt Gov't Model that at one time was my favorite Bullseye pistol. During the early 80's I had a frame mounted scope base installed so I could mount a red dot. Over the years, with much use, the frame cracked through the dust cover and bent down about 1/16". So I stripped the frame and saved all the parts as spares and now have a bare frame (which does bear the serial number and is the part considered to be the firearm), but legally how do I dispose of it?

Re: Can I throw a gun away?
Edit: The post above about illegal transfer to the trash collection agency seems to have merit.
Couldn't you "demil" it? Cut it in half with a hack saw or crush it with a big hammer such that there is no way anyone could get a slide on it ever again? Avoid damaging the serial number. Then throw it away?Last edited by imashooter2; November 19th, 2008 at 07:19 PM.
