It's one of the stumbling blocks of reloading 5.7 cases. Once the lacquer wears off, it's difficult to replicate. That can lead to feeding issues in some guns. If the M&P can operate without it, then that opens more options for reloaders.
You're right, 5.7 doesn't have much in the way of recoil, but I certainly wouldn't complain if had even less.

That gap between the slide and frame at the front looks awful.

I liked the fn i had years ago. It was a wideglide tho.
