ATF Just Released Their Brace Ruling

I'd consider the trap when the ATF gave their approval that pistol braces were good to go. Only to let millions upon millions of gun owners buy them and then change their mind and say they're illegal.

My question here is can we take the view that makes them complicit in a crime knowingly allowing millions of SBR*s to be created and sold with their blessing? Seems like they are admitting to breaking the law here with their prior letters and actions.

I don't know WHAT they are going to do, but I DO know that nothing in life is free.
There is a REASON they are doing this "free" thing - and "trap" makes the most sense.

Not necessarily to "catch" individuals and kick in their doors, but to gather backdoor registration data to use in the future.
There is nothing about any of this that is being done to benefit gun owners.

Probably because the ATF didn't say "It's OK to build machineguns so long as you only shoot them on weekends" ten years ago, followed by "Now you can shoot them all week long - but only occasionally", followed by, "We changed our minds - no more machineguns at all unless you play some fun games we made up - trust us, we want to help you."

It was ok to build machineguns until 1986 (with a form 1 for registration).

In 2014, the ATF issued their first statement regarding pistol braces, stating that if the device is *used as a shoulder stock,* doing so would constitute *the making of a rifle.*

By extension, if the firearm*s barrel is under 16* in length, the ATF determined that using an attached pistol brace as a shoulder stock on an AR pistol would be equivalent to manufacturing an SBR.

Many gun owners were concerned, disagreeing with the notion that misusing a firearm attachment is equivalent to *manufacturing, particularly when the ATF*s letter specified that it applies regardless of whether or not the brace is modified.

A year later, the ATF*s Firearms Technology Criminal Branch issued another statement, reinforcing their 2014 opinion by stating that shouldering a pistol brace is equivalent to redesigning the device.

Between 2015 and 2017, multiple manufacturers (most notably, SIG Sauer) and other prominent members of the gun community sent letters to the ATF, explaining their positions and challenging the ATF*s interpretation of the law.

In March 2017, the ATF issued a third statement regarding pistol braces, appearing to be a reversal of some of their previous interpretations and concluding the following:

Merely shouldering a stabilizing brace is not illegal and does not constitute redesigning the device, so long as it is incidental, sporadic, or situational.

Modifying or adapting the pistol brace to make it more comfortable to use as a shoulder stock does constitute redesigning, therefore legally converting the AR pistol into a rifle (and most likely, an SBR).

I really wish we were all fighting to remove SBRs from the NFA (or all of the items) rather than fighting for pistol braces. That's like starving and fighting for some stupid crust instead of the sandwich.

I know. I'm just saying laws, even if inherently crappy and passed by crappy Democrats, are different than a flip-flopping, corrupt bureaucratic agency issuing edicts by fiat.
