    Default 45-70 load recommendations

Got some 405 grn cast bullets, new starline brass and IMR 4198 powder. Anyone have any recommended loads? Will be shooting it out of a marlin guide gun.

Only shoot trapdoor loads out of a Handi and tried IMR4198 early on. My notes show 30.0 grs. with dacron and a home cast 405 gr. Lee HB averaged 1240 over the chrono. Only noted accurate and clean. Have settled on other powders since for trapdoor loads.

From what I*ve been seeing somewhere around 40 grns out of a lever gun. Looking to get around 1400-1600 fps if possible.

Stay away from max loads....unpleasant is an understatement. It's a good way to separate the men from the boys. I used to think I was tough till I got ahold of some Buffalo Bore 405s. The 1895G punished my shoulder.

If you don't have a book, Hodgdon has a page to help you figure it out.

I have a book, just looking to see if anyone has any personal preference loads before I start.

Find your self some Unique powder and load 12 to 13 grains and be happy as a lark in any gun . That 's my favorite trapdoor load for 60 years now and shot my first deer with 12.5 gr load one shot at 100+ yards was all it took .
