My father started me on a 20ga pump at 8, shooting trap. I'm thinking i could get him going at 7 with an ar15 in .22lr. Or maybe I'll let him shoot the p90.

Congrats, I recommend buying your son a pre-lock S&W 357, a JM stamped Marlin levergun, a 1 oz. gold coin, and a case of vintage port from a well known Portugese vintner. Stash them all away and when the appropriate time comes, each of those will have appreciated greatly in value, well ahead of inflation.
