🦌PORTAGE, Wis. — A 15-year-old’s successful hunting experience was literally taken away from him, but thanks to some online sleuthing, the story has a happier ending.

Garrett Diehm shot the buck in Columbia County on opening weekend for the nine-day gun-deer hunting season. Diehm’s mother Sarah said the buck was stolen off of their property in the time it took the boy and his family to run back to the house to let his grandparents know.

I wonder about the whole circumstances. Did the guy see the kid shoot it or did he happen across it? I'm not a hunter so I never had to give it any thought but what does one do when they come across a dead buck laying in the forest and nobody's around? Sure, it's easy to sympathize with the poor kid shooting his first deer and all, I get that. I had one come into my yard a drop over a few years ago so I put a tarp over it to keep the buzzards off. The guy came along a couple of hours later and picked her up and brought me some slim jims in appreciation. I called my neighbor up and asked him what I should do. He said to leave it in case the hunter came by but if he didn't after a while, she was ours.

I agree. It's not cut and dry.
The "thief's" explanation is not completely unbelievable. You're hunting and come across a downed deer.
How much effort is required on your part to figure out who shot it? "Taking it" is better than leaving it to rot.

That said, "LOOK AT THAT RACK!!! This puppy is MINE! Gotta get it out QUICK!" - another entirely possible scenario.

Butcher it himself. This way you get the cuts you want.

That guy knew what was going on. For one, the kid used a rifle, heard for a mile.
Two, the deer is warm.
Three, there is a stand a hundred feet from the deer.
Four, all the foot prints left in the snow from the kids.
The guy was probably hunting the same deer but the kid got it first. Dudes a dick,
and knew he would be caught.
Now what if he skinned it wrong and screwed the cape up, now the kid cant get a full shoulder mount.
I'd make the guy pay for the mount too, and the necessary repairs to the cape.
