    Default AK build ?

Ok, so ive pretty much settled on buying an AK for my next purchase. Whats it take to build one? ive never built a gun before, but i understand that someone with the sense to know how things go together, can build an AR. is it the same with an AK? Need any special tools?

Any info you guys have would be great.

Building an AR is like assembling IKEA furniture.

Building an AK requires tools and rivets and machinery.
I have not built an AK, and prob never will, because it is not something you can just do on your dining room table with some punches.

gotcha. that settles it, doesn't sound like an AK is something good for a first build

Hooo boy will you need tools.....lol

You have two ways to procede:

    1. get a pre formed AK receiver from Nodak/Spud

    2. Make your own receiver from a blank and then add the parts from your AK parts kit.

If you kit is from an AK with a milled reciever then you will have to find a receiver that will take the barrel as these types have a screw in barrel. If you AK kit is from a stamped receiver then you can go with a receiver flat that will need to be bent into shape or the stamped types from Nodak/Spud.

As far as tools are concerned you will need some of the following:

    1. Harbor Freight 12 ton shop press. This is used to remove the barrel from the part that holds the barrel in place(trunion). The press can also be used to reinstall the barrel after the trunion is installed into you new receiver.

    2. Some type of rivet jig to bend the rivets into place. The barrel trunion has two rivets that must be seated after the barrel is removed and the new receiver is attached to the barrel trunion. There is also rivets used to hold the receiver in place and to hold the rear trunion in place. The rear trunion is what holds the rear stock in place.

    3. If you go with a 'do it yourself receiver' then you will need a jig to bend the flat into place. If you get a 'do it yourself receiver' then try to get one that has the top of the reciever pre bent as this is one less step to do in a receiver bend. If you go this route you will need to spot weld two parts into the receiver and heat harden all of the support holes and these two parts that you will spot weld in place. The do it yourself will also need a spot welder so again harbor freight has this tool, but you will need to replace the tips with a tip that can reach into the receiver to spot weld the two parts that the receiver will need.

Take a look at these sites to see if you can do this type of build:

With the right tools and a shop press you could easily do it yourself. Do a youtube search for akbuilder. There's a gentleman that put together a couple videos of riveting together various Ak's.

The two most important tools are a press (12 ton or more) and something to press rivets. You could probably make any jigs that you need.

Oh, if you bend your own flats ... do forget that you need to heat treat them too.

If a complete build is not for you, you can always build a saiga conversion. You could do this cheaply, with tools you already own, and you will have a true AK type rifle in the end.

Well....I just looked over on that forum and like regular AK's there is a serious shortage of saiga sporters right now. Damned panic buyers.

Anyone got the equipment and want to host an AK building party? I've heard of others doing that, and I'd be happy to come and pitch in something toward costs.
