Default How to Get Stable hold Shooting a Super Blackhawk

The Ruger Super Blackhawk is a big heavy gun w/ a 7-1/2" barrel. When shooting it from a bench I use a two hand hold similar to how I shoot offhand. Even with a firm grip, there is a significant amount of wobble. I cannot figure out a way to support it w/ sandbags under the trigger guard, barrel, etc. that really does a good job stabilizing it. Any suggestions?

Work to improve your grip strength/upper body. It's a big help for stabilizing any kind of pistol, but especially a big gun like the Blackhawk. I have the same problem with mine, a lot of wobble compared to my other pistols. Even my S&W 986 (6") feels light and steady after I shoot the Blackhawk. For hunting? Maybe consider a shooting stick.

I place the frame just forward of the trigger guard on the rest and put slight pressure forward to stabilize. I also rest my wrists on a bag as well.

When I do it properly this is the result at 25yds. In the field you will certainly need a rest of some sort.

Do you have a small bag that you rest the front of the frame on? Also, anytime that I put any bag close to the cylinder, it gets flame cut in short order. How does this not happen to you?

Lighten the load by five cartridges left out.
There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

Here is a picture of the rest and bag that I use. The leather cover on the rest can be replaced should the need arise.

    I also have a Bog-pod rest that I use.

No matter how you rest it put a couple layers of demim from an old pair of jeans on top of any support. It will stop you from cooking your expensive gun rests from the cylinder gasses. Don't ask me why I know.

And the Ruger Super Blackhawk is way to heavy and bulky to shoot offhand. And the weight is all up front. I could barely shoot one in my prime so unless you are a bodybuilder forget it. I can still handle a regular Blackhawk and can put up with the increased recoil.

I use a MTM pistol rest. No issue with any of my revolvers or semi auto guns.

I will say I got in the habit of using 5lb dumbbells in preparation for hunting season. It makes a big difference when you're trying to hold that much weight at arms length.
