Re: The Victims of Temple University
From the latest Temple Parent and Family Experience Newsletter. Glad my daughter is out of there. I carried everywhere when I was visiting.

Dear Parents, Guardians and Family Members,
Over the last several months, I am sure you have seen some of the harrowing news headlines that illustrate the tragic ways in which gun violence is affecting the country and our region. Philadelphia, like many cities across the United States, is dealing with an unprecedented epidemic of violence. Unfortunately, it has, at times, also hit too close to home.
It is never easy to be a parent or a family member of a student who is studying miles away from home. And all of the normal fears and concerns are magnified when you turn on the television and see stories focused on some of the recent happenings in Philadelphia.
What I can tell you with full confidence is that that the entire Temple University administration and I recognize that it is paramount that every student feels safe and is safe on this campus. That is our top priority. We also recognize that it is equally important for parents and families to feel comfortable sending their students to Temple.
With the start of the fall semester upon us, I wanted to take a moment to update you on our latest public safety and anti-violence initiatives. We want you to know that we are doing everything we can to ensure that Temple is a safe community where your child can thrive and embrace transformative opportunities for learning and discovery.
While most of our students were away for the summer, our Department of Public Safety has been hard at work. Here is just a snapshot of some of what has been accomplished.
• The new one-touch personal safety app TUSafe launched on Aug. 14.
• Less than one year after agreeing to a new four-year contract, Temple University and the Temple University Police Association (TUPA) reached an agreement on additional terms to the contract that provide even better compensation for police officers.
• Drawing from evidence-based research and best practices from other law enforcement agencies across the country, the department has been restructured so that it can better serve the Temple community.
• In addition to new or upgraded equipment, the department is also exploring gun detection technology, automated license plate readers, and GPS for police officers.
• Police officers are now working 12-hour shifts as part of a new pilot program. This has had a positive effect on both officer wellness and staffing of patrol shifts, as on some shifts, there are now an additional 3-6 officers patrolling within the patrol zone.
• The university has worked to increase its outsourced security staffing. In particular, Allied Security bike patrols within the patrol zone will increase by approximately 25% this fall, and strategic deployment will enable increased engagement with residents in a particular patrol area.
• Nearly 500 new cameras have been purchased to replace older equipment and will be installed in the coming weeks. Eighteen Code Blue Phones are being updated with 360 degree cameras, which will be completed within the first few weeks of the semester. Additionally, DPS is purchasing five additional cameras for donation to the the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) which will be installed in areas near campus with limited camera coverage. The DPS has also signed an agreement allowing access to the PPD cameras located within the patrol zone.
I invite you to learn more about the various enhancements to our Department of Public Safety.
We also recognize that gun violence is a complex issue. It requires both an immediate response like that which we are seeing from our Department of Public Safety as well as a commitment to pursuing long-term, holistic solutions.
Last year, our Violence Reduction Task Force recommended that the university develop a comprehensive and coordinated strategy for community engagement efforts focused on violence reduction. The comprehensive report that was conducted on our public safety function through former commissioner of the Philadelphia Police Department Charles H. Ramsey and his firm, 21CP Solutions, reinforced this key concept, and we are pleased to say that we are well on our way.
In May, Philadelphia City Council President Darrell Clarke introduced a resolution that called for both Temple and the city to form a task force that would address the underlying factors contributing to violence. Just last week, together with Council President Clarke, I convened the first meeting of the leadership group of the Community-Temple Partnership Safety Zone, and together, we are eager to work toward this shared goal.
This fall, we will open the Temple Community Gateway that will be available to anyone in North Philadelphia. Think of this as a one-stop shop where community members can come to gain access to a number of resources, both here at Temple and across Philadelphia. We believe that this gateway can be an important part of an important part of the solution in North Philadelphia. Learn more about the Temple Community Gateway.
August is an exciting time, as we welcome so many inquisitive and enthusiastic students, poised for more learning and developing. We hope that your young person’s energy, ideas, and actions will help us in maximizing our impact on the quality of life in our community.
Thank you for everything you do to support your student along their educational journey. I wish them the very best as the fall semester gets underway.
Sincerely,
JoAnne A. Epps
Acting President

Re: The Victims of Temple University
My daughter's apartment overlooked this ballfield. There was a shooting there last year also. She said that the chatrooms are saying that a round went through a 6th floor apartment window but that they are keeping it quiet. She was on the 11th floor last year and the 4th floor this year. Here's the view of the field from her 4th floor apartment. Glad she's out of there.

A boy was injured on Sunday night as crowds fled when gunshots were heard as a youth football game was being played on a field near Temple University's North Philadelphia campus.
According to police the incident happened at about 8 p.m. on Sunday, after shots were heard as the North Philadelphia Blackhawks youth football team was playing against the West Philadelphia Panthers team at a field at the intersection of 11th Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue.
Officials said that a boy -- who they did not provide further identifying information on -- was injured when the crowd panicked after the sounds of gunfire were heard in the area.
The boy was not shot, and police said, the shooting was not related to the game. Though, as of Monday morning, officials did not disclose the severity of the boy's injuries.
Police have not provided further information about that shooting, nor have they said if anyone was injured in the nearby area due to gunfire.
An investigation into the incident, police said, is ongoing.

Re: The Victims of Temple University
What am I missing here? With the thousands of universities in the country, not to mention about a hundred in PA, why would parents want their children to attend this university located in this shithole?
And why would students want to attend there?
