A while back I got a Ruger AR 556 for like $820. I'm no expert, but it seems like a quality product for a reasonable price. My former Marine neighbor checked it out and said that it was a good value.

This is my vote. I picked up an 18" MPR earlier this year and it's outstanding. Rifle was under $800 and it has a rifle length gas system, very soft shooting. 4.5 lb 2-stage trigger. 15" free float M-Lok handguard. It's a lot of rifle for the money.

Palmetto State Armory. Not the "Best" AR, but for the money, they are hard to beat. I have a number of them. My first from them was one of their Freedom rifles, the cheapest model they offer. It has over 3,000 rds through it with absolutely zero issues. I have beat that rifle to hell and it just plain runs.

It's my vote, too. Ruger ARs for some reasons have always been underappreciated, especially considering that they all come standard equipped with a CHF barrel.

Bear Creek Arsenal. Yeah, people look at them as garbage tier, but they work great and hold up. And $399 for a complete rifle? Can't be beat. Not everything has to be Gucci to be good.

BCM, Sons of Liberty Gun Works, etc. Depending on the budget, there's a good number around say $1,300 - 1,500. If going for budget, than PSA seems to do well. Really though, can always add/upgrade parts as you go as well.

I hate to show my ignorance but if you have a few different manufacturers of an AR, are your mags interchangible or do you need different mags for each gun and how do you keep them straight ?

The mags are interchangeable. One standard mag for all that are .223/.556 so no need to keep them straight.

There are different caliber AR*s which would take different mags, but I don*t think that is what you are asking about.
