Ammo Storage

I was thinking about moving my ammo to the basement to keep it out of the way (the range stuff, not the defensive stuff)

My basement needs a dehumidifier to run all summer to keep humidity below 60% and it gets musty down there IF I turn the dehumidifier off. (It's fine in the winter). I had issues with tools rusting and mold growth before I put the dehumidifier in. But now I'm paranoid.

I keep ammo in military ammo boxes with good rubber seals. And I keep silica packs in the cans.

Would anyone have concerns storing ammo in this basement? In sealed ammo cans. On shelves or in a cabinet, not sitting on the cement floor.

And would it be a big deal if I opened a can to take out a box of range ammo and let the basement air into the can?

Sounds exactly like my basement. I do not keep guns or ammo in it.

I learned the hard way, I took a gun down there and left it, because my weight set is in the basement and the hoodrats were targeting my house. Two months later, it was rusted almost solid, took all my uggah duggah strength to rack the slide. I got it functional again, but it looks like crap. Shame, cause they're selling for 2x what I paid for it years ago.

I wouldn't either but out of curiosity, I might put a box with a few rounds in it so I could see how it went.

It's long term storage that I'd want to do. So using a single test box would take too long to show me results. (I'm sure it would be fine for a couple months.... it's a couple years I am concerned about)

I guess it comes down to how much I trust the seal on a used 50 cal ammo can. And with $400 of ammo in the box....I trust them enough in the rest of the more humidity controlled house but the basement....

I did get the rust on my tools to stop when I put the dehumidifier in. But I can deal with a tiny rust speck on a hammer more that I can deal with tiny corosion specs on ammo casings.

Screw it... I'll just tell the wife POOFA thought it was a bad idea so no we have to keep all the ammo in the living room.

The ammo shelves will look nice next to the portrait of her grandparents I think.

I keep mine in ammo cans, in the basement with dehumidifier running. Never had an issue. Basement even gets some water in it occasionally during a heavy rain. Everything is off the floor. Safes are in there too, with a golden rod and dessicant boxes in each one. No issues there either.

You could always build a room that you can control the environment in. It's what I did.

My basement is a wet mess, but in one corner of it, I built a security room. Walls and a commercial steel door. I also put a wall heater in, so I can control the temp. So, this is a fully enclosed, fully finished room, about 7x9 feet. Not very big. I've had zero problems with temperature or moisture in this little room.
