    Default High Or Low Mount?

    AR Platform
    No BUIS
    Red Dot
Not geared up other than over the ears hearing protection
Just for range fun, not competition or anything "fancy"

I am thinking use a higher mount so I don't have to get my head all situation and flat to rifle? I have a low mount but honestly, why would I use that? Not a fancy red dot, came with two mounts, just asking.

Flame away if you must lol!

Most "low mounts" are for shotguns or AK47s - that sort of thing where the red dot mounts pretty much right on the receiver.
"High mounts" are apparently better suited for the way an AR15 is shouldered.

Then there's various heights of "high mounts" in order to get the setup you want - absolute co-witness, or lower 1/3... that sort of thing for use with backup iron sights. (I know you said "no sights)

More crap than you ever wanted to think about...

All mine are "high mounts" of some sort - I have a cheapo Chinese red dot that is oddly "too high". I have to move my face up to see it properly.
I need to get a slightly shorter mount for that one.

Lower 1/3 mount is what you want for an AR.

You could go with co witness which is same as irons but having the optic higher gives you a better cheek rest imo. Keeps your head up a little higher.

There*s not much difference between the two, I*m just use to having my optic sit a little higher than iron sights. I rarely use irons and a few of my AR*s have optics mounted with lower 1/3 mounts and no iron sights on them, some have BUIS. If you go with a quality rds chances are you may never need the irons, but it*s nice to have a backup if you ever decide to put a set on.

Cheek welds on AR's (or any other combat rifle) are highly over rated and not necessary

and I still have a perfect sight picture of the irons

You all are very helpful. i*m gonna stick with the factory mount that was installed which is the 1.41 inch one. Like I said, there*s no front side post or rear sight aperture so it*s just going to be a fun gun with a red dot sight. Making it as easy as possible :-)
