    Default ultimate defensive AR-15 carbine?

What would your ideal set up be for a defensive 16" carbine AR-15?

Leave brand out of lower/upper (dont want that debate here) but things like optic, grip, buis, light, vfg, trigger etc.

so much of that is personal preference.

some people like aimpoints, some like eotechs.
some like mag well holds, some like VFG, some like stubbies, some like tubes.
    some like non-folding BUIS's, some don't.

every AR picture thread has people putting up their war horses...almost no 2 are the same, and no-one has the "best".

    My
ideal outdoor AR would include a middy gas system, Larue 9" rails, Vortec FS, surefire 6P at 10:30, TD stubby grip pretty far forward, magpul MIAD grip and trigger guard, geiselle single stage trigger, magpul ctr stock, Larue rear sight and stock front sight, either a CQT or Eotech in a QD riser, and a BFG Vickers sling.

A "home defense" AR would be different.

I'm going to "re tool" my AR and I'm just browsing around for ideas really.

I want it to replace my pistol for my gun to grab for home defense needs.

I've picked up more hornady TAP ammunition for the PMAGs im trying to order in bulk but Im just playing around with some of the other upgrades.

What I know I want so far

    1. VFG of some sort.
    2. Light mount of some sort
    3. Surefire to fill the light mount.
    4. Flat top to replace my A1 upper
    5. BUIS
    6. Some kind of optic
    7. Single point sling mount for my ACE stock

    My ideal home defense setup:

rail with vfg and flashlight, 14.5" barrel with lightweight profile, collapsible stock, eotech.

How do you grip a VFG or handguards?
    Magnified or non-magnified optics?
    Fixed or folding sights?
    Why single point?

Not sure I understand your first question...I'd use my hands?

    non magnified.

    folding.

I don't know of a more comfortable way to sling the weapon "at the ready"

    Re the VFG's...
there's the "gamer" type grip on the handguards, with the index finger pointed towards the muzzle and the thumb coming up over top

Same grip location, with the hand more underneath the handguards.

Then with the VFG, there's the death grip with the thumb closing under the gun

Or pulling back on a stubby with the thumb not closing, and the index finger pointing forward...or wrapped up really high against the rail.

This last one is almost identical to the IPSC style support hand grip, and is what I prefer on a VFG equipped carbine.
This thread goes into more details on that...

W/o knowing how YOU interface with the gun, we can't do a very good job recommending gear.

Wow. Talk about a thread that hits home!

Went to breakfast this morning with Buckmark (good guy; thanks Buckmark!).

After eating we headed to Cove Creek Outfitters as I was thinking about a Glock 26.

Upon entering the store Buckmark gave me a beginner's course on the AR15.

He was like a kid in a candy store. All giddy & such.

Yep. Walked out with an S&W M&P15.

I know absolutely NOTHING about this thing!

Lightweight or Hbar 18" barrel with full length gas system. I think the Hbar is smoother in transitions. The rifle length gas system is a lot softer than a carbine.

Ergo ambi grip. Fits my hand best.

NO vertical foregrip. They slow me down on the clock every time no matter how cool they look. Carbon fiber handguard for low mass and heat protection. You can drill them for rails. 4 rail handguards are heavy as pigs filled with sand. Surefire if you have to have a light.

GOOD two stage trigger. Triggers always matter at making hits at speed. The 1911 has a two stage trigger. No one ever calls them a slow gun at speed.....

A good brake. Yeah, I said brake. Brakes get hits on targets faster with follow up shots. You aren't likely to lay siege. You may defend yourself with a few shots. Being "Tactical" often means making the first and final hits. No, brakes really don't flash that much. No, they won't make you blind or deaf. I've tripped off a bare barrel 16" gun inside and with a brake or not, you are going to hurt without ear protection.

Any decent red dot for under 50 yards. For over 50 yards a dot/lit reticle/variable scope will own a 1x red dot.
