Useful or useless is going to vary from person to person and depending on the intended purpose.

While I don't think a 16" 9mm carbine is "useless" in a home defense role, I do think that a much shorter 9mm AR15 PISTOL is much more home defense friendly because it's highly maneuverable, and (at least for ME) much easier to shoot accurately than a handgun.
    That said, I don't consider a 9" barrel 9mm AR15 to be a carbine.

I consider any PDW type weapon that lacks full auto to be worthless. Those guns were made to hose down the target with bullets. Without that capability you're severely limiting yourself. You gain very little other than capacity and stability.

Now something with a longer barrel might be useful in a backcountry or survival type situation due to ammo being easier to carry and find.

    Pistol Caliber Carbine (.357 mag)

    Pistol Caliber Carbine (9mm)

    Pistol Caliber Carbine (9mm)

All are better choices than these - unless you're going to the grocery store.

This is exactly why I own a Highpoint 995. My wife truly enjoys it due to light recoil even with its questionable ergonomics.

For me, AR pistol with suppressor covers anything I think I*d want a PCC for.

Pistol Caliber Carbines are better than a sharp stick in any event.

Personally, I have a Ruger PCC that's broken down and stored in a nondescript rectangular carry case that does not look like a firearms case. The Ruger is set up for Glock magazines, and the case holds eight loaded 15 rd mags in addition to the two-piece carbine. The mags are compatible with the G19 pistols that we always carry, and the Ruger PCC in its bag comes with much of the time on longer trips intrastate. So during these trips, we have a carbine, two G19s, 12 magazines, and 180 rds. all interchangeable, i/c the SHTF.

No. I have 2 that I use for competition. It all depends on the intended purpose/scenario which was not enumerated here. The answer to "is it stupid" is "no".

Here's a video rating FIVE pistol caliber carbines.
Of the FIVE, ONLY ONE of them is a carbine - all the rest are PISTOLS.

    WTF?
