I’ve got both geissele and radians and like them both. The radian probably does a slightly better job of gas mitigation

That's about my take too. <$10 ones will do the job, a lot of $30-40 ones will do it better/easier. But anything more than that is just for show/branding.

I like not having gas in my face. I also don*t like my guns looking like ass so rather than spend my time (the one thing I can*t buy more of) I buy more expensive charging handles and forgo the diy solution.

I also like the more expensive (better built and designed) handles because I*ve ripped the oem type handles to pieces when running the gun hard. I*ve broken a couple over the last 10 years. The better made handles direct the force differently and don*t shear the shitty little roll pin oem handles have.

It*s also easier to get a good bite on a slightly larger handle. Not so big that it catches on your kit but bigger than the small stock tab size.

Expensive charging handles - help me understand
The answer is right in your question. They are expensive so they charge you for for it.

Nope! I*ve spoken about this before. You just don*t want one made from 6061. But there are Rapture similar & others made from 7075 Billet just as the expensive handles. Of course the Rapture is among the most *polished*, but all that matters is materials & machining for longevity. Again, just stay away from 6061, and the ones that don*t say what it*s made of(CHINESIUM!=Zink/Aluminum, No Thanks!) If you want one other than MilSpec, you can get a decent 7075 handle with extended or Ambi latch & different styles from $30-$40. That*s about MAX I*ll spend. $100 is insane! It*s a piece of Aluminum!

The top performer to me is the Breekarms Warhammer & Warhammer Micro. This is a 7075 Ambi handle, with heavy duty deep latch and all the bells *n whistles the Radian Raptor has. And it*s HALF the price. At $45-$49 & 10% off. But do some searching. Can usually find it for $39.99, which makes it about the best dollar for dollar. Another good one is the Fortis Clutch Single leg. It has some amazing machining & pretty trick. Sells for just over $40. I*ll tell you a trick. Go to Google *Image* & do a search for *7075 Ambi Charging Handle* You will be amazed at how many there are. Besides the ones I listed, there are several in the $60 range.
