I felt like tossing in my 2 cents, and I expect CHANGE!
I have a P3AT, I bought it used, so the break in period woes I heard I didn't suffer. Now having it, I rarely feel comfortable have it (size envey), and limit it to only summer carry. My point is, I would highly look into a PF-9. Only a bit bigger, and with a thin material holster, or the belt clip, very summer friendly.
Oh, get chrome slid if you can. Looks prettier.

I'd be wary of the dealer.Just verify the worth of the scattergun before you make any deals.
I love my Kel Tec P32. It has been flawless through 600 rounds. But that's what I'm into, matter of opinion.Selling off a a sizeable Spyderco collection here

There are lots of good options in the price range. He should check them all out.
Full Size/Compact:
Ruger SR9 -- about 375
Ruger P85 -- about 300
Stouger Cougar -- about 380
Various Taurus pistols
Used Glocks: 380 to 425
Sub-Compact:
Keltec whatever (make sure he gives you 5 or 6 boxes of ammo for it to be an even trade)
Ruger SR9c -- about 400
various Taurus pistols (e.g. PT111, PT140) - about 375Almost a LIB .... ertarian
