Listen to the Active Self Protection podcast with Ed Monk.

He says that a few strategically placed armed staff members with concealed pistols is the best way to prevent mass casualties (besides infrastructure security, entrance points, etc.) The locked & staged rifles are fine, but it takes too long to retrieve them. You need an instant response from someone who is WILLING to do what needs to be done.

The devil is in the details.

Not knocking the technical college by any means as a good friend who taught at Gunsite also taught Carbine classes at a local community college where he lived. Without knowing the particulars of the training facility, the curriculum, and the pedigree of the instructors, it's difficult to assess whether this initiative will provide the necessary means to interrupt and neutralize an active shooter, or end up a wonky cluster-f**k.

The biggest problem with setting up security in schools is you're taking away money that go to useless unionized teachers. That's where the biggest problem to protecting school kids is, teacher unions.

On the premise that the SRO's are not well trained, I believe the perpetrator, not knowing that fact but knowing a weapon might/is on the premises, may move on to another target... A mall, lets say.
I also think this particular sheriff would not stand his men down in an event.
