Default 😎 American martens, last seen in the early 1900s, could be reintroduced in PA

🤔 small furbearer could be reintroduced to the forests of Pennsylvania in coming years.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is considering a reintroduction effort for the American marten.

The proposal, which would authorize the staff to proceed with the development of a reintroduction and management plan, is to be discussed and voted on at the agency’s July 9 meeting in Harrisburg.

Sadly when I read anything .gov tries to do anymore, my mind immediately goes to "what are they plotting?"

Declaring private property off-limits because now an endangered marten has taken up residence and they need 12acres of uninhabited space to breed

I can see a lot of pissed off farmers as now they have yet another predator that will go after chickens. One they can't shoot.

Most people in rural areas can still do whatever they need to do but for some reason everyone nowadays feels the need to immediately post shit all over facebook, twit-ter and the internet in general. Just dumb.

Not specifically pointing at anyone or anything, just saying.

Cute little guys. Now listed as "least concern" on endangered species spectrum. They were extirpated from PA by fur trappers years back. Don't see any substantial threat to farm foul from reintroducing them. They primarily eat mice and voles and also berries and such making them good seed spreaders.

    Cool!

One more tag that I can apply for with my Furbearers license for trapping.

    Give it about 5 years.

I seem to recall a time when there was no coyote season in PA. Now it's 'shoot 'em anytime, anywhere.' Even on Sundays.

    Could be!

I was working down in northern ChesCo today and the folks stated that they had seen fishers on their farm, even that far south. I'm not sure if that area would support marten, but the northern territories definitely should.

There are fisher permits now in many counties I believe. One per year like the bobcat IIRC.

Yep. Got mine last week, along with bobcat and otter. Now, I just need to find the time to go out for them when the seasons open.
