NY State Carry Permit; is it good for anything?
Due to the recent SCOTUS ruling of the eliminating a valid reason for apply for a conceal license/permit, NY state wasted no time in passing legislation making their carry permits almost worthless. Here is a sample of what the new law will do.
- SENSITIVE PLACES' WHERE GUNS ARE BANNED. New York's proposed list of such places includes: government buildings, medical facilities, places of worship, libraries, playgrounds, parks, zoos, schools, summer camps, addiction-support centers, homeless shelters, nursing homes, public transit including the New York City subway, places where alcohol or marijuana is consumed, museums, theaters, stadiums, polling places and New York City's Times Square. In other words just about everywhere.
- Private businesses will be presumed to be gun-free zones unless their owners say otherwise. So private businesses will have to display a sign allowing firearms not the other way around.
- The bill would require applicants for concealed-carry permits to submit their current and former social media accounts from the last three years to review by the licensing officer, usually a judge or police official, to weigh the applicant's "character and conduct."
- Applicants must complete at least 15 hours of in-person firearms safety training, and at least two hours of training at a firing range, where they must prove their shooting proficiency according to standards to be developed by state police.
- Applicants must meet for an in-person interview with the licensing officer and provide the names and contact information of their spouse or domestic partner, any other adults they live with and say whether children are in their home. They must provide four character references.
- The permit holder will be subjected to monthly background checks and social media monitoring.
It’s a felony to violate any of the above which will be very easy to do. Also this law pertains to the whole state not just NYC.
ALBANY, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- The New York State legislature passed a sweeping gun control bill on Friday in response to the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down a century-old New York law that required “proper cause” to carry a weapon in public.
Gov. Kathy Hochul called a special legislative session on Thursday and Friday in order to push through the gun control changes.
After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that enshrined abortion rights in the U.S., Hochul also used the special session to advocate for a state constitutional amendment that would safeguard reproductive rights and expand protections for transgender New Yorkers.
That amendment is still working its way through the legislature, but Hochul said at a press conference Friday afternoon that legislators had come to a “conceptual agreement."
She said she expected the amendment to pass Friday evening.
Once Hochul signs the new gun bill into law, it will allow gun owners to apply for concealed carry licenses, but would restrict where weapons could be brought.
For example, guns would only be allowed in businesses if the owner put up a sign explicitly allowing it.
Other off-limits locations include demonstrations, schools, healthcare facilities, parks, Times Square, public transit, bars, polling places, entertainment venues and more.
It will be a felony to bring a gun to a restricted area.
Gun license applicants will be subject to interviews, social media monitoring and monthly background checks. They will also need to undergo 15 hours of training at a firing range, provide contact information for household members and renew their licenses every three years.
Permits will be denied for a broader range of criminal offenses.
The bill also contains a slew of other provisions and rules surrounding the purchase of ammunition and gun accessories, the storage of weapons and other minutiae for gun ownership.
It allows for local governments to impose even tighter gun laws if they so choose as well.

Good grief, the place you would need one the most like the subway or Times Square and they won't let you carry. I heard some NYS politician on the radio and she said: "The Empire Strikes Back! New York will be safer with these restrictions in place". Oh really, like NY is a safe place now and letting people who go through all the hoops not carry in those places will somehow change things? These people are on some serious drugs.

Come on man! The SCOTUS decision changes EVERYTHING! Everyone in these blue states will get permits, and the states will even grant non-resident permits to all applicants! Silver bullet!
That's mostly what I'm reading here.
But seriously, I agree with you 100% and pretty much made the same call. And there are PLENTY of liberal judges who will issue stays to keep those 'laws' in place while the cases drag on for years and years.

Bruen decision is like the dam explosion in Force 10 From Navarone. When the explosion went off, Carl Weathers started yelling about all of this for nothing!?! Edward Fox told Carl Weathers to be patient then slowly the damn started slowly cracking until it failed and collapsed. Clarence Thomas put very specific wording in the majority opinion. It*s going to take some time for the lower courts to properly apply the decision. Hell, SCOTUS just vacated some lower court decisions regarding AWB and mag capacities.
