DIY Black finish repair
I screwed up the finish on a spot on the slide of a nearly new 1911.
Anyone have a method to refinish this spot. I scuffed it about a 1/8" by 1" spot. It is still smooth, but right down to the white metal.
Thanks in advance.Last edited by Flash; July 1st, 2022 at 11:44 PM. Reason: correct numbers

You probably will never get anything to perfectly match the overall finish (unless you get the complete pistol refinished) but you can try Oxpho-Blue or 44/40 from Brownells or Birchwood Casey Perma Blue solution. Make sure you degrease the spot before applying to getthe solution to work the best. Alcohol or acetone works best. Follow the directions also.

Just send the slide out to be refinished, or cerakoted.

Any form of touch-up will disappoint for one big reason. You know it's there. After a touch-up, a casual observer might not notice it. That's in the realm of camouflage.
There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

Touch ups generally make the problem worse by damaging more finish around the original defect.
Things that are used show wear. Just the nature of the beast. Don’t try to damage your guns, but don’t worry about damage when it happens.

I started Cerakoting myself recently. It*s worth it. But even it rubs off. Honestly, teach yourself to appreciate imperfections & wear. Long as you keep it clean it won*t rust.
