Re: Concealed carry needed for a rifle?
Legal limits are 16" for rifle, 18" for shotgun.
Shorter, and they are NFA items.

Re: Concealed carry needed for a rifle?
Long gun - Empty chamber with no magazine inserted, keep loaded magazines in a separate pouch container separate from the gun. You can't have loaded magazines in the same spot of the rifle, an outside pouch would be a separate container
Pistol - You don't need a conceal carry license to transport a pistol to/from the range, you just can't have it loaded so basically follow the same rules as a rifle above. Would highly recommend your LTCF so you can carry a pistol loaded and not worry about it. Without your LTCF that means to/from the range to your residence, don't detour or stop for lunch etc.

Re: Concealed carry needed for a rifle?
What about if the OP want's to stop for something to eat while he's on the road with his rifle?
Can he make a stop without having a LTCF?
Thanks for any advice,

Re: Concealed carry needed for a rifle?
Doesn't matter. No license is required to have a rifle or shotgun within a vehicle in PA(outside of Philly and absent a State of Emergency).
The long guns must be unloaded though, and any loaded detachable magazines that are suitable for the long guns that are present must be in a separate container.
Example: I can drive all over PA with unloaded rifles and shotguns, so long as they aren't loaded. I can stop anywhere that it isn't otherwise prohibited to have firearms on the property. I can leave those long guns in a vehicle unattended. No license required. You can legally carry a rifle/shotgun under trenchcoat concealed without a LTCF. You can "carry"(transport) a rifle/shotgun on your dash, in a gun rack, encased, etc without a LTCF because it isn't prohibited by law - it just has to be unloaded.
PA's laws regulate carrying "firearms" concealed, or in a vehicle. "Firearm" = handguns with barrels under 15", rifles with barrels under 16", shotguns with barrels under 18" or ANY gun with an overall length under 26".
PA law then requires a LTCF for ANY gun on public domain within Philly or during a State or Emergency.
PA law then requires that long guns(rifles/shotguns that exceed the "firearm" dimensions) to be unloaded in/on/upon a vehicle.RIP: SFN, 1861, twoeggsup, Lambo, jamesjo, JayBell, 32 Magnum, Pro2A, mrwildroot, dregan, Frenchy, Fragger, ungawa, Mtn Jack, Grapeshot, R.W.J., PennsyPlinker, Statkowski, Deanimator, roland, aubie515
