Flats of any kind are considered non firearms until bent into shape.

actually I'm retired law enforcement and was able to buy and carry anything I wanted anywhere I wanted too.just was wondering how people can get a serial number on a gun they built without one. wasn't really expecting any one to make a big deal about my question. you were close though was born in the bronx

Back to the actual engraving itself - 1/16 high x .003 deep for the characters is understood, my question is about the location. Different types of firearms have different surfaces available for the engraving, but does it have to be in a specific location? For example we all know where it is located on a typical 1911 style handgun, or an M4 style rifle. Is it OK if the engraving were to be placed under a grip instead?

My opinion is it should be readily visible, I have a hk , when the stock is collapsed its partly obstructed but extending the stock and its clearly visible.

I agree! DON’T comply with illegal, ANTI 2A laws from DEMONcrats & their territories! Build, build, BUILT! Also.. make sure to travel to a regular State to buy mags, (even though the SCOTUS just told Liberal cities/states to “reconsider” their magazine & parts compliance laws as being in violation of the 2A… which they ARE) Or, contact someone like me who has no issues shipping you parts your State illegally bars… like magazines!

Oh, and I wouldn*t serialize it. I certainly don*t! The 80% lowers are one of the great things over the last decade.
