    I put my own serial numbers on my home built guns in case they are stolen and I need to report the theft. I am the only one who knows these numbers.

    Uh, what? That is not what the final rule says.

    Unless you decide to sell it (or have an FFL gunsmith keep it overnight/log it in a bound book), a regular person (non-FFL) does not need to mark it.

    None of the rule changes directly impose new requirements on non-licensees.

    ETA: If HR7910 were to pass the Senate, all of this goes out the window. You WILL be required to serialize "ghost gun parts" and an FFL is required to do it. Not to mention assembling your disassembled firearm after cleaning it will be a felony unless you're an FFL. Insane.
