I bought a Glock 44 .22lr for my wife and daughter to train with. I liked that it’s practically identical to the 19 so they could easily train on a pistol that would be the same as a defensive model they would later move to.

Ive put 1500ish rounds through my S&W M&P 22 Compact and can honestly say Ive never had a hiccup with it. Mostly Thunderbolts and Mini Mags. Been a great little plinking pistol, and something to start people new to handguns on. And if you have an M&P 9mm, itll be easy to transition to since they are very similar in feel and function.

For the money, you can't beat the S&W SW22 Victory. Comes with fiber optic sights and a Piccatinny rail. 2 mags. Easy take down. Will shoot just about any 22lr, even Thunderturds, as long as you clean it immediately after shooting them. I kept count until I had 5K rounds through it, without one hiccup, except for lots of Winchester duds. I would guess I have close to 10K rounds fired with it now. For the first 5k rounds, I cleaned it after every range trip, but now I can go 3 or 4 trips before cleaning it, no problems, as long as I don't shoot Thunderbolts.

I like my M&P compact but she may not be able to operate the slide. I would say a S&W Victory. Easier to operate the slide than an SR or M&P, and field strips easier than the Ruger Mark whatever.

I don't think the slide on the M&P Compact is heavy at all. It's on par with the TX22 and the P17. I do not like the Victory. It's like a Buckmark and a Mk II had a fat kid that can't do anything right.

If she has small hands the Ruger sr22 has small grip. The Smith Wesson victory grip is pretty small too. The Ruger mark IV standard grips are smaller than the 22/45 grips

    Browning Buckmark is another option.

And I started my daughters on semi-auto. In addition to gun safety they learned how to load mags, how a semi auto works, malfunction clearance when cheap .22 ammo caused a jam, etc.

That knowledge translated very well into handling their own Glocks.
