Good for years. Same with flour...but put them in freezer for a week, once they were sealed shut.

This food shortage is going to gain steam as these corrupt mother fuckers keep pushing their green agenda on farmers...even though some of the largest financial firms have pretty much given up on the green/ESG move.

If you haven't been stocking up on the basics that you eat and have a good assortment of recipes which allow you to use those items, in different ways, giving you a good source of nutrition and not suffering from food fatigue...you are being short sighted. Its not rocket science...and paralysis via over analysis, isn't going to serve you well.

This forum is a great medium for asking questions and getting answers. There isn't just one right answer...but many different ways to do the same thing. Food and water will be the next huge fight...as we see the ongoing destruction of food processing facilities, manufacturing plants, farms, the elimination of fertilizers...all of this is going to reach a tipping point. Doing nothing to help yourself is lame...unless you think others are going to be generous with their stash, which is highly unlikely.

You could survive on rice and beans alone...a good part of Latin and Central America does it every day.
I agree. I see all of these prepper sites selling dehydrated food/MRE type meals.

They are pretty expensive. They seem reasonable until...

You see that the individual servings seem to be lacking in calories. Many I've seen are like 250-300. I understand that may be basic survival, but how long are you going to last on 750-900 calories/day? Want more? Buy more. Price goes up.

I think it's easier to stock up on everyday canned and dry goods, and some cheap bulk items like sugar, flour, rice, beans, etc. and some mylar bags and O2 packs.

I got some navy beans out of my small stash the other week the other week for soup. They were kept in a clean Prego jar and were about 8 or 9 years old. After soaking overnight and a day in the crockpot, they were still hard. Not crunchy but firm. Reheating the next day for a couple hours softened them some but not entirely. They tasted fine though. Not sure what storage method, if any, would change that

I'll admit that we used dried beans for the first time about 2 weeks ago. They were 'fresh' and we had nearly the same experience in a soup. Soaked in water for nearly a day, then in the crockpot for the soup for like 8 hours. The skins were still a bit tougher/firmer than the canned beans we usually use. They were soft inside, but just the skins were a bit tougher.

If you look at the belly button of The Bean, in the saddle so to speak, there's a pinhole and that's where the water needs to go through to soften them up. After about 3 years the Bean has dehydrated and shrunk so much that the pinhole is closed. You can cook them for longer, or you can smash them with a meat tenderizer and break them in half. But you'll have a hard time ever making them real soft again.
Something clever belongs here. Same screen name at ARFCOM.

Fresh start. Why would you not want to? Farming, building infrastructure, working hard. No safety nets. No government handouts. You work or you die.

We shall live in caves, raise two headed livestock, and spawn a race of 3 eyed humans...

If it happens, it'll happen in a day. The fallout will only take about 2-4 weeks to stop being radioactive, then we can emerge from the bunkers and start the work of getting everything up and running again. Step one is to survive another day. One step at a time.

That may have sounded appealing to me at one time but, at this point in my life, I prefer my Laz e boy and central heating.
