Default Form 1 SBR advice for a NFA virgin (be gentle)

I have my eye on a Colt upper that would get my dog shot if I were to place it onto a lower with a stock or add a vertical grip to it. Don't want to do a pistol build, so a form 1 SBR looks like the way to go.

That said, what is the best order of operations to keep my dog alive? My initial thought was, eFile the form, engrave the lower upon approval and THEN buy the upper once everyhing is good to go. Any issues with that plan? Really don't want to engrave a lower only to find out later that my Form1 wasn't approved for whatever reason the feds decide is in style that day. I heard a ton of Form1 applica were denied en masse awhile back. That sounds like nightmare fuel to me.

Also, can I setup an eFile account before I have a specific NFA item that I will submit forms for or is it transaction-specific? I'm really hoping that once I set all this up, it will transfer my info and fingerprints from one to another NFA transaction since I'm hoping to divest some stocks & bonds to invest in stocks and barrels.

That is what I did for one of them. The rest are pistols with the brace.

Imo buy the upper now before it disappears, plus buy a Virginia lower or 80% so the short upper has "a home" while waiting on the stamp.

Bad movie paraphrase on my part...was in reference to Shooter with Mark Wahlberg.

I'd be willing to say that most SBR builders assemble their item as a pistol pending SBR approval. It's an extra pistol buffer tube- not a great expense, and you can always put your SBR back into pistol configuration if you don't want to have to get ATF approval for out-of-state travel.

You can set up an eForm account any time you want to, you don't (AFAIK) have to have anything ready to go NFA before you build your account.

I agree with the buy your upper now, build a pistol and then do the eForm 1. Get approval, engrave the lower, put on whatever stock you desire to make it a SBR. Volia!
