That said, I have a system in place for identifying the various CALIBERS within my own group of guns.
If I need to grab one in a hurry, I don't want to have to think about what I'm reaching for to be sure I have the correct mags for it.
    Anything basic black is .556
Anything with red accents is 9mm
Anything with anything "brown" (be it the sling, handguard, whatever) is 7.62x39
(I have yet to do anything to mark my 22LR, but I know it by the "bb gun" red dot that's on it.
Like this? I see RED, White and Brown

Original plan was "grey/red" = 9mm, but I couldn't get another matching grey, so "red" suffices.
That winter camo sling is long gone. And there's no brown there at all.

I've yet to ever see two identical AR's in the same place. Same make and model, sure, but they always have different accessories, wear patterns, optics, ect. You might be overthinking this.

I went with a white paint dot on the base of the stock. On the adjustable stocks, it's on the adjustment lever and on the fixed stocks, it's right by the sling mount. I figured if it's in a rack or just laying there, they be easy to identify. Thanks for all the suggestions.
