    Default .22 AMMO?????

Just bought a .22 pistol and got a 550 rd box of ammo. Now the box says
".22 RF long rifle". Is that ok to shoot with my ruger mark 3? Sorry if it's a dumb question but never had a .22 before so not sure if there's a difference. Thanks for your help

Yes, I have the exact same pistol, and that IS the correct ammo. "LR" is just a designation, like "magnum," "special," or "short." Simply distinguishes it from other .22 ammo.

    You'll enjoy that Ruger!

Thanks war wagon...I got this 500 rd box for $13 bucks at wal-mart. Been looking online for deals in bulk but it seems it's just cheaper 2 buy them at wal-mart for that price? Do you know of a cheaper place online?

For the cost you'll pay in shipping, no. Best to watch the sales circulars from all the usual suspects (for now...) - Wal-Mart, Dunhams, Gander Mountain, Cabelas, Dicks, et.al. For what you'll pay in shipping, you could buy ANOTHER box locally.

Great site for getting prices and finding the best deals: http://gun-deals.com/ammo.php

Walmart, 550 box of Federal .22LR (what you got) is the lowest price per round so you got the best deal on it. 2.4 cents a round, can't go wrong at that price.

Unless you're looking for specialty target .22 ammo I'd just keep buying it a Walmart. It's cheaper that way.

i would recommend the federal at wally world. It is cheaper than the remington and on the up side I have not had as many duds out of the federal.

Congrats on your Ruger! Fantastic firearm. Mine is the MkII. It's had at least a couple hundred thousand rounds through it. I've had it almost 29 years now and it's never needed anything but cleaning. It's seldom picky on ammo but seems to relish Thunderbolt the most.

Here's a little info about 22's and their designations:

22RF LR stands for 22 (the caliber), Rim Fire (vs a centerfire round with a primer in the center of the case, in a rim fire the primer material is in the rim and when the firing pin hits and compresses the rim it sets it off), Long Rifle (the case length).

22 CB, very short case basically with a BB as the bullet. Many "Gallery" guns (used to be seen at carnivals, etc.) used guns chambered for these.

22 Short, case a very little bit longer than CB, typical bullet

22 Long, next size up, typical bullet

22 Long Rifle, typical bullet, longest of the non magnum rimfire cases, what most semi auto handguns are chambered for. You can get them in standard, high, and hyper velocity.

22 Magnum, also called 22 WMR (Winchester Magnum Rimfire). These can only be fired in guns so marked. Don't shoot 22LR's in a magnum chambered gun, the 22 mag cases are different dimensions, you may have a tough time extracting the case.

In revolvers marked 22LR, you can shoot CB, Short, Long and Long Rifle ammo as you don't rely on the recoil to operate the mechanisms. The shorter cased ammo may not be as accurate because of the chamber length. Same thing goes with some 22 LR bolt action rifles. You can shoot the others in a semi auto but you would have to feed and extract them manually (single shot).

CCI always got the nod from me as the best .22 ammo. However I've shot it all and they all are pretty much on par these days. I've got CCI, Remington, Winchester all in my cabinet and it all shoots.
