Re: What did you buy yourself today - PART 2
I went to a military vehicle rally and swap meet this past weekend, found some neat stuff.
3" dummy fuze, AR carry handle optic mount, IO semi sten bolt, M1917 machinegun clinometer, 50 BMG blank that was missing from my 50 bmg cartridge collection, and a crate used to ship 10 M1928 Thompsons to Russia. All of these things were well below the going prices.
The clinometer was issued with M1917 machineguns back when they were treated like artillery and the guns had a range table for indirect fire. I figured it would be a nicer angle finder to use with my mortar than the harbor freight one.
Nice bandoleer for 100 rounds of linked 7.62 NATO.
Best purchase was an MG3 tripod with the optic for my MG42/59. It's just missing the shoulder straps for carrying it and the battery box for illuminating the optic. These things are really well made with the remote trigger and other features.

I can't afford an arms race with Cruzans. I buy the bigger stuff, but he buys a lot more stuff.

This video shows how troops utilize these mounts to fire the MG3 from cover using the periscope sight and the remote trigger (skip to the 6 min mark if you're impatient):

Earlier German "Lafette" tripods for the MG34 and MG42 actually incorporated a "searching fire" mechanism that would automatically move the gun's elevation up and down while firing. The gunner was responsible for moving it left and right.
WW1 armies treated *heavy* machineguns (1917, mg 08 maxim, vickers, etc) like artillery, with the intent of them to be directly or indirectly raining bullets on a battlefield, covering as much area as possible, and keeping the enemy hunkered down in their trenches. WW2 armies started to deviate from this tactic as the battlefield and tools of war changed. Now MG tripods and mounts seem to mainly be used in fixed positions for defense.Last edited by JoshIronshaft; May 11th, 2023 at 08:58 AM.
