Unless you have an NJ carry license, NJ exemption, or Federal protection against NJ law (eg LEOSA), there is no legal way you can possess the handgun at the airport - FOPA cannot be invoked (see post #4). Shipping is also problematic because the tariffs of most, if not all, of the common shippers require FFL involvement.
If you start you trip from a Pa airport (eg ABE) with handgun in checked baggage you are good to connect through Newark provided the baggage remains under airline/airport control.IANAL

You are good as long as your connection does not get delayed, or your flight to Newark is late and you miss your connection, and you get stranded in Newark, and are told to collect your luggage, while other arrangements are made. But, yeh, that never happens.
