You know the greeter at Wal Mart? His job is not to make you feel welcome. His job is to look everyone entering in the eye because studies show it reduces retail theft by a significant amount. People don't like to commit crimes after you stare at their face.

This isn't 100% effective

Sometimes you have a roving band of ferel teenagers just looking to be violent. They don't care if you see them. They want a fight. And for that group eye contact can make it worse as it gives them a reason to engage you. (It's a stupid reason. But we are talking about stupid people here. This kind of person will take eye contact as a threat or a challenge to them.)

Or drug addicts....they won't even notice you looking at them. You are just a conduit for the next $20 they need for a hit. They don't likely know what planet they are on.

Ultimately you need to look like a more difficult mark than someone else nearby and you will be left alone most of the time.

There was an article the other day saying a large portion of DC's murders occur over petty insults, whether real or or often just perceived. Stuff no one with 3 brain cells should get flustered over, but some people do. The concept of disrespect definitely seems to be stronger among certain groups than others.
