How Vertical is Vertical? AR Pistol Foregrip

OK, I know I can't put a vertical foregrip on an AR pistol without getting into NFA territory.

Is there a set angle defined for a bottom-mounted foregrip at which it is no longer considered vertical? Or is it like pr0n, where they will know it when they see it?

Secondary question: instead of 6:00 (straight down) could a 90° grip be mounted at 9:00 on a quad rail a la a Sten? Don't wanna do it, but I'm curious.

The "law" says 90* to bore axis. But to be safe if you can wrap your thumb around it and hold it consider it a negotiation.

As I understand it, the BCM's are good to go because they are like 89 degrees.

As USMC pointed out, the "clock angle" on the barrel is irrelevant. If it's a grip that's intended for grasping with your non-trigger hand, then it's likely illegal. I don't believe the law specifically says anything about the angle (in the plane of the barrel), though. A thompson foregrip is not 90 degrees to the barrel but would still violate the law in just about any court, if used on a pistol barrel.
