An Esbit portable emergency stove sounds like it would fit the bill for you. Small, extremely portable, solid fuel source so no worries about pressurized gas canister. They're on the pricier side but if you just want a "just in case" no fire fuel source to heat food, this would work.

I forgot about those. Several sizes/models to suit different needs - even one that's a true emergency stove that is flat and compact that you bend into shape to use it. Not ideal for multiple uses, but ideal for packing in a bag.

As Suehr mentioned about my Sterno stove reference, Esbit's don't provide a lot of heat either and those tabs last maybe 5 minutes.

I've used esbit too. It used to be a great light weight option back in the day. There's a reason I switched to a canister stove though.

It takes quite a while to boil water on it. Might not be as much an issue for what the op wants, but it's kinda annoying for my use anymore. I did use one on the group backpacking trip we did. Probably won't going forward though.

Slightly OT but I do not like this cooking pot. It is too narrow and tall and there will be a lot of wasted heat that goes around the sides. It is best to find one that is at least 2-3x wider. If weight is an issue you might want to consider an anodized aluminum pot, a lot of people use these for backpacking. And all pots must have a lid.

Something like West Chester posted in post 2 would work a lot better.

That's what I have though, so unless I find that it really sucks, I'll stick with it.
It should be fine for something that will likely never be used.

I just bought a Pathfinder bottle stove for twig fires. One of the small cans of sterno fits under it and my 20 oz cup nests inside. If I want to heat some water or soup, should be adequate. I also got a twig pot stove. My pot sits in it with a large sterno can in the pot.

I have a couple sterno stoves, two esbit stoves and two old explorer heat pak charcoal stoves, which fold flat. When it gets warmer, I'm going outside with an adequate beer and cigar supply and boil water on all of them, with various fuel sources, so I can time em.

Just thread the "stove" onto the fuel can, turn the valve to the left as shown by the arrow, and ignite with... ignite with... IGNITE DAMMIT!!!
Keep trying until you can get it to light without the Bic flame instantly blowing out.
(a good example of why you should try things before expecting them to just work because you saw it on a video - going to get a wind-proof lighter!)




It took 2 minutes on "medium" (best guess) to see it begin to boil




6 minutes for a rolling boil - again, not on full blast.

I had the lid on, but it boiled over, making a mess, so I removed the lid while it simmered.
