I have one. I've only used it in stove mode a few years back camping out in Death Valley. Since it is forced-air, it burns really hot and thoroughly once it is going. I used smoker chips from Walmart since there was no in-situ fuel source there, but I like the concept of not having to carry fuel canisters. I did not try to charge my phone - you are really not running it enough to "charge" much of anything given current energy densities of battery packs. IMO best uses of the USB outlet would be to run a USB stalk light while cooking - which I see they have now - included in that kit.

What you say may be partially true, but I'm not looking for something for bugging out, so I'm interested in a means to cook/heat water without building a fire, (which may save weight, but does require more work/prep)

Are those "fuel canisters" (that can pack into my Stanley cup) safe to keep stored inside a vehicle 365/year?
    Any concern about heat?

Then look at Sterno Stoves https://www.walmart.com/ip/Sterno-Fo...Stove/35264387
Designed for a Sterno can, but you can also use them with sticks and have a stable heating platform.
    Cheap and lite.

Mentioned on the page is the Redcamp model https://www.walmart.com/ip/REDCAMP-W...ll&athena=true

    That looks viable too.

Problem with sterno is it takes literally 5x as long to heat a cup of water as alcohol or canister stoves.

I keep them in my garage year round (no heat or AC). Never had an issue. I wouldn't throw them in a fire, but I can't see a hot car doing anything to them.

There are too many portable stove options to just say one. You should start looking at some backpacking forums for recommendations.

But can I ask.....why do you think you need one in a bug out bag? Are you planning to stop on occasion and brew a cup of tea? When backpacking you don't just have a stove, you have to have the food too, and water, and accessories like extra fuel, eating utensils etc.... that takes up a lot of room. Look at a backpacking site and see what the usual weight percentage of the cooking supplies you need. Its significant and it will be hard to fit in a daypack. You can go a few days without food so I would recommend just having some power bars and trail snacks. And if you think you might be stuck a day or two concentrate on water. Get some kind of small water purification system or some tablets.
