Colt Python .357 - Who knows about them?
I acquired a colt from my grandmother, which belonged to my grandfather. I will save the long story, and no it will not ever be for sale. I am just trying to learn whatever I can about it. I found paperwork that it was purchased on my birthday in 1974 (i wasnt born yet lol). The number is 3462E on the "frame", but on the wheel bracket is "3462". When I look up all the colt python serial numbers, "E" wasn't at the end of the serial numbers until 1975, and it also seems they were 5 digit? The other part that confuses me is "E" is by one serial number but not the other.

Thanks!, doesn't look like it sat in a closet in a leather shoulder holster for at least 15 years huh, lol.
While the curiosity is there on it's value, I have no intention of selling it. Anything I have already, and will acquire that was my grandfather's, I keep, until I die. Then I just haunt whoever sells it.
Thanks!, will email them now.

That thing is OLD, and probably quite dangerous. In the interest of your & your family's safety, you should send it to me without delay, for proper disposal. No charge.

Re: Colt Python .357 - Who knows about them?
I looked at RL Wilson's Colt's Dates of Manufacture. 3462E technically doesn't exist in his book. 3462 was made in '57, E3462 was made in '69 and 03462E was made in '75. I would have thought the 0 was just omitted but I have a 45 made in '76 and the first digit in the serial number is in fact 0.
I have a python made in '78 with the E suffix. The serial number is also on the crane and the E is repeated there as well.
Couldn't hurt to call Colt Customer Service. Letters used to be salty but they may give you something over the phone
And damn, that is a beautiful gun
