My usual time to approval number from when my DL# is keyed into PICS and the autocheck starts is 40 to 50 seconds.

Takes longer to complete the forms.

To the OP: Right now is a busy time for PICS, and also a high employee vacancy period due to vacations. Another factor is if the FBI's NICS (National Instant Check System) is slow or down, that will cause a delay.

You will probably get a call from the FFL within a day or three.

I picked up a cheap .22 plinker a couple months ago.

PICS took over 2 hours (my record is spotless)

While I was waiting 3 other people started the process and got PICS approval in minutes for things like a .44 magnum, some giant rifle I didn't recognize, and a 9mm Glock

The guy at the store told me it's totally random. Some people go in seconds, other take hours. He said he has seen people get rejected in 2 minutes or take 4 hours to get rejected. Most people aren't rejected and the waiting time is totally random.

I finally got approved. My FFL said he had to call them. It was damned annoying. This was my most expensive firearms purchase in, well, ever. Two separate firearms. They do add up! LOL.

It happens to me all the time. Something flagged in the computer search....either a similar name, date of birth, etc... The computer can't see that the Protection From Abuse Order issued in Allegheny County is for a man who is 6'7" with red hair and an amputated right hand. A person needs to physically run your information and determine that the "bad" man is not you.

All those new guns for Christmas causing long waits for pics and more ammo shortages. You all suck.

I do all my customers PICS checks by ePICS, can't afford to be on the phone then have to wait for a long time to talk to an operator. Also, the PICS system is designed to randomly pick people to go to an operator just as a quality control check. I've had customers who have always been approved in 2 minutes or less for the last year (and some had bought 1 gun a month or more) get picked for the random check and it would take anywhere from 1/2 to 4 hours, just depends on how loaded down the system is. When picked randomly, the person just goes into the operator queue and you wait until his request comes up to #1 and you either are told to call an operator or the operator sees nothing out of the ordinary and clicks on "Approved" and you get the number.

Yeah.... when the process requires me to spend an extra hour browsing around the gun store.....just the worst.

PICS delays are know to cost a lot of money as buyers have more stuff in hand by the time they reach the cash register.
